Winter Sports Wrap-Up

GIRLS JV BASKETBALL

The girls JV basketball team showed an amazing display of Falco’s PRIDE this season. Although our team was young this year, what they lacked in experience they made up for with effort and commitment. In each game, they knew their new skills would be put to the test. However, these challenges never prevented our JV lady falcons from maintaining a fantastically positive attitude and giving their maximum effort in each practice and game. This commitment to each other brought the team so much closer to form new friendships and an amazing support system. I’m extremely proud of the growth that each girl made over the course of the season. The future is bright for the Foote School girls basketball program with these girls coming up as role models!

GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL

This year's girls varsity basketball team was the most determined and hardest working team I have ever coached. Every day the girls came to practice and wanted to be challenged. They were always eager to learn and compete. The work that the girls put in at practice was noticeable during our games and it led us to an 8-1 record.

The game that will stick in my mind for a long time was our impressive win against Hopkins. The girls played fantastic during the first half and had a lead going into the second half of the game. Hopkins did not quit and continued to battle their way back into the game, even taking the lead. With under a minute left the girls were able to knock down some very clutch baskets, and send the game into overtime. In overtime the girls kept the momentum and were able to beat Hopkins in a thriller. This game captured the attitude of the team and was a display of their work ethic and drive. It was a great year coaching these ladies and watching them grow as individuals into a team!

BOYS JV BASKETBALL

When I reflect on my experience coaching the JV boys basketball team in years to come, I will do so fondly. I will, of course, remember the tough blowout losses, and the sweaty discouraging practices. I will also remember the three-game winning streak we went on at the end the season, the razor-thin victory against Hopkins, the more comfortable win against Hamden Hall, and even that time we beat varsity in a scrimmage. But these memories will inevitably fade; already, a mere week after the season ended, I am having trouble recalling the score of our last game. What will stay with me are the memories of long bus rides where the kids built trust, fostered camaraderie, and shared their dreams and aspirations with each other. I will also have memories of layup lines before games where the kids joked and showed genuine affection and admiration for their fellow teammates, and will recall players being honorable in defeat and gracious in victory. The lessons of how to be a good teammate, how to work hard, how to focus, how to be resilient, will last long after they leave Foote. I firmly believe their bonds to each other as teammates and friends will persist as well. It has been an honor to be their coach this season.

BOYS VARSITY BASKETBALL

The boys varsity basketball team competed with a high level of effort all season. With the exception of a few games, each game was highly competitive and a great deal of fun for our players to compete in. This year's team was comprised of many younger players and it was encouraging to see our returning players step up to help their teammates grow and develop throughout the season. Overall, our team improved a great deal over the course of the season. It was a pleasure watching this team work together and have fun! I am glad to have worked with these young men during the 2017 basketball season.

SQUASH

This squash season will be remembered for many reasons. From top to bottom, it was the strongest team we’ve ever coached. There were seasoned players who pushed themselves to get better, as well as a number of brand new players who improved as the season progressed. The collective attitude was one of positivity, hard work and mentorship. Congratulations to each and every one of our players. Job well done!

SWIMMING

The team had a winning season (4-2). As their coaches, we really want a shout out to how well experienced swimmers helped out new swimmers, the way they cheered each other on. A special thank you to Foote alumna Anika Zetterberg '13 for coming in January and leading a clinic on starts, finishes and flip turns that improved the skills of returning swimmers and introduced the concepts to the newest members of the team. It was fantastic working with this team.
